Fall and Spring Semesters
In the fall and spring semesters, students take Judaic, cantorial and education classes; receive private voice lessons and cantorial coaching; and sing in the Hebrew College chamber choir, Kol Arev. The first year of the program emphasizes acquiring a foundation in Torah, Talmud and advanced Hebrew text skills. Students continue their study of Hebrew language for an additional semester.
Education classes are coordinated with the Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education, and every cantorial student has a Shoolman adviser in addition to an adviser from the School of Jewish Music.
Students fulfill a cantorial internship (two semesters) and an educational fieldwork placement (two semesters).
Prayer Leader Summer Institutes
The program includes two intensive summer sessions, eight weeks each. Learning with a variety of Hebrew College and guest faculty members, students study nusach hatefillah, liturgy, contemporary models of tefillah leadership, accompanied repertoire, choral conducting, composing and arranging.
Summer sessions also include Communication and Presentation Practicum, a class unique to our program. This course explores communication modes including vocal performance, sermon preparation and delivery, and community presentations.
Extracurricular activities give students the best of Boston and Boston-area culture. These include trips to Tanglewood, art museums and historic Jewish institutions.
